You can drive to the town from Srinagar by going through Tangmarg. The last 12 kilometres to Gulmarg are uphill, and the road goes through pine and fir forests along the way. People ski, toboggan, snowboard, and even heli-ski on the slopes of Mount Apharwat, which can be reached by a Gondola lift. Every year in March, for three days, the Gulmarg Winter Festival is held. Young musicians, filmmakers, and photographers get a chance to show off their work at the festival.

Gulmarg is 56 km from Srinagar. It is in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, in a cup-shaped valley. It is 8,694 feet above sea level and looks like a bowl. The soil in Gulmarg is made up of glacial deposits, lake deposits, and moraines from the Pleistocene era. The rocks, like shales, limestones, sandstones, schists, and others, are on top of these layers.

On Apharwat Peak and in Khilanmarg, there are many places where you can see the Nanga Parbat and Harmukh mountains well. Shepherds made a call to the hotel. Gauri Marg means “the fair one.” It was named in honour of the Hindu goddess Parvati. In the 16th century, Sultan Yusuf Shah of the Chak Dynasty and his queen Habba Khatoon went there.

They changed the name to Gulmarg (meadow of flowers). Jahangir, the Mughal emperor, chose 21 different kinds of wild flowers to grow in his gardens in Gulmarg. In the 1800s, British government workers would go to Gulmarg to escape the heat of the North Indian plains in the summer. Their favourite things to do were hunt and playing golf.

Gulmarg had three golf courses, one of which was just for women. One of the golf courses is still there, and it is the highest golf course in the world. It is 8,690 feet above sea level. In 1927, the British set up a ski club in Gulmarg. Every year, there were two ski events, one at Christmas and one at Easter. Aurel Stein, a Central Asian explorer, also went to Gulmarg at this time.

Rudy In 1960, the Department of Tourism for the Indian government asked Matt to find a good place for this. Matt thought that Gulmarg, in India, would be a good place to build a winter sports centre. The Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering opened in Gulmarg in 1968 to teach people how to be ski instructors.

Over the next 10 years, Indian planners will spend 30 million INR (US$470,000) to make Gulmarg a world-class ski destination. Asian skiers went to Gulmarg because it was a good place to ski. Sylvain Saudan, a Swiss skier with the Himalayan Heli-Ski Club of France, worked with Gulmarg to start heli-skiing around the middle of the 1980s.

Gondola in Gulmarg

The Gulmarg Gondola, which is one of the highest in the world at 3,979 metres, was made by the French company Pomagalski. The height above sea level is 3,979 metres. About 600 people an hour can get from Gulmarg to a shoulder at 13,780 feet on nearby Mt. Apharwat Summit using a two-stage ropeway.

The first stage goes from Gulmarg, which is at an altitude of 8,530 feet, to Kongdoori, which is at an altitude of 3,080 metres. The second stage has 36 cabins and 18 towers, and it goes up to 12,959 feet on Afarwat Peak, which is 13,780 feet high. By taking a chairlift from Kongdoori to Mary’s shoulder, skiers can get to higher elevations.

Gulmarg’s fragile ecosystem has been hurt by too many tourists, and activists have called for stricter rules to protect the environment from overtourism. Gulmarg is at a high altitude, so it has a humid continental climate with a wet winter and a lot of snow for its latitude. The summers are neither too hot nor too short, and the shoulder seasons are not too cold.

Most people who live in Gulmarg are either tourists or people who work in the tourism industry. In the summer, the Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes, which are nomadic, go to Gulmarg to find pasture in the Himalayas.
