Madan Mohan Temple

Madan Mohan Temple is in Bishnupur of West Bengal was built by Malla King Durjan Singha in 1695 AD. It is a bigger Eka-Ratna temple than most of the others in Bishnupur, and it is also important. The temple has a square base that is 12.2m x 12.2m, and it stands 10.7m tall on a platform that is not too big. The roof of the temple is a typical Bengali style called a “chala,” which is topped by a single “sikhara,” or tower.

Madan Mohan Temple

The main part of the temple is made of earthen bricks on a platform of laterite blocks. The front of the temple is covered with beautiful terracotta plaques that show mythological stories like “Krishna Leela.” There are covered porches on three sides of the innermost sanctuary, which is where the idol is kept. Each of these three sides, except for the back wall, has three arched openings. The main entrance is on the west side. See the ASI notice for more information.

Because of an interesting story about its god, Madan Mohan Temple is probably the most well-known. The first statue of the god was put up in a village in Bengal. When Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a well-known Vaishnava saint, went to see the deity in person, he helped spread the word far and wide. So, the Malla king took the idol to his capital, Vana-Vishnupur, and put it in a temple made of clay just for that purpose.

Madan Mohan Temple Bishnupur

The Madan Mohan Temple is in the Indian state of West Bengal, in the Bishnupur district. On August 1, 2022, the Chief Minister of West Bengal announced that the Bankura district would be split into two parts: Bishnupur and Bankura. Legend has it that the god Madanmohan fought on the side of the Malla king against the Maratha invaders (called “bargi”) who came to Bengal.

In 1820, there was a huge earthquake that destroyed the first temple. The current temple was built after that. In the late 17th century, King Durjana Dev Singh built the Eka-ratna Temple. It has a square flat roof with curved cornices and a pinnacle on top for his family deities, Radha and Krishna. The temple is built in the style of a chariot, and the walls have engravings of stories from the Hindu religious books Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Madan Mohan Temple Travel Tips

This place reminds me of my mother, who has passed away. Along with my beloved mother and other family members, we had a great time traveling. During the New Year’s holiday in January 2012, I went here because it is one of the hottest places in the state of West Bengal. People only come to this part of Bengal in the west during the winter. As the temperature in the winter is about 10 °C, the highest it gets in the summer is about 40 °C.

I have to tell people from other countries that December and January are the only winter months in Bengal. Summer starts in March, and from June to October, it rains all over the Indian subcontinent during the monsoon season. So, make plans based on the weather forecast and have fun in India, especially in West Bengal travel.
